book review

The second self: computers and human spirit was written by Sherry Turkle, professor of social studies of science and technology in the Messachusetts Institute of Technology. First of all the title of this book impressed me lot I think Turkle feels computer as people second self, in this days. This book first edition was published in 1984 and second edition in 2005. Though Turkle was writing in 80s, she predicted well about the influence of computers on human life in coming days. This edition lags information about social community web sites, blogs, down loadings, up loadings etc. reason for this would be, no presence of this kind of information technologies in 80s. I expect this kind of information in the latest edition, but not available in that too. In the first part of the book child psychology with the electronic gadgets (Merlin, Simon) was explained well.

About the technological innovations Turkle said these innovations is to analyse the things which are not in the world, this is just driving force to the human intelligence. In the second part of the book Turkle explained about the hackers, saying people are getting emotionally connected and edict to the computers like hackers. In the third part of the book, about Jean, airline ticket agent, she blames computers for her mistake shows, how computers are influencing our own minimum thinking ability. Enabling people not to use brain for minimum calculations. In my view computer should not rule the world, it should just help the human being to make things much better and effective. Nowadays people need computer for small calculations and memories and not using mental abilities as a human beings.
